The Inspiration and Process: Dandelions are probably one of my kids’ favorite flowers to pick in the yard. The bright golden flowers are easily spotted across a mostly green lawn. They love to pick the flowers, then set them in water for a few days, and watch and see if they turn into fluffy white seeds. We usually then take them outside and blow them all over (though, one of the last times, they wanted to grow some in a jar inside - and so far, it’s worked!). These plants, though small and not even very fragrant, are just a bit magical. They make such a quick transformation from bright, open flower, to closed, dried bud, to suddenly - seeds. If you aren’t paying attention, you may not even notice - until one day you look back at the dandelion near the windowsill, and realize it was changing, quietly, all along.
So, what do I do when I am inspired by something botanical? I turn it into soap, of course (I mean, obviously, yall!). I used dandelions, carefully picked from where they grew wild and undisturbed in our very own yard, slowly dried in the sun, infused right into the soap bar (and added on top, just for a decorative touch!). The colors were easy to choose - I used mineral-rich rhassoul brown clay for the base of the bar, and an infusion of nourishing turmeric and calendula petals for the golden layer. The scent, though - that was a bit harder. Dandelions don’t smell like much. So, instead of trying to replicate the scent of a dandelion flower, I decided instead to create a scent that was inspired by this special plant. The notes are mostly earthy, woodsy ones, with sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver, and oak, like the useful, woody root of the dandelion. Then there are little hints of spice, like clove and cassia, inspired by the brightness of the plant. Finally, there’s just a hint of sweetness, earthy sweetness, like smoky beeswax, maybe just the tiniest notes of vanilla, bergamot, and lemon. If you enjoy earthy scents, you will really love this one (and if you don’t, I won’t mind keeping them all!).
